Oxfam South Africa Calls for Global Action to “Tax the Super Rich” at Y20 Summit 2025
Johannesburg, South Africa — Oxfam South Africa (OZA) will convene a high-level side event at the Y20 Summit on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, under the theme: “#TaxTheSuperRich: Africa’s Call for Justice, Equity, and Global Accountability.”
The 90-minute dialogue will bring together youth leaders, tax justice advocates, and policy experts to examine how fair taxation of the wealthiest individuals and corporations can tackle inequality and mobilise resources for public services, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
Confirmed panellists include:
Christian Hallum, Tax Lead, Oxfam International
Lurit Yugusuk, Youth for Tax Justice Network
More than 400 youth delegates from across the G20 and the Global South are expected to attend the Y20 Summit, making this one of the most significant youth gatherings on economic justice in 2025.
“At a time when inequality is widening, it is morally indefensible for the wealthiest individuals to avoid paying their fair share,” said Nkateko Chauke, Acting Executive Director of Oxfam South Africa. “Tax justice is not only about figures; it is about fairness, dignity, and building a future where young people have the opportunities they deserve.”
The side event takes place against the backdrop of urgent global debates on progressive taxation, wealth redistribution, and illicit financial flows, which are expected to feature prominently in the lead-up to the 2025 G20 Summit.
