Join Oxfam South Africa as a Non-Executive Director and Drive Systemic Change

Oxfam South Africa (OZA), a pioneering social justice organization, is seeking to appoint four visionary Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to its Board. These leaders will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of OZA and contribute to the global fight against poverty and inequality.

About Oxfam South Africa

OZA, established in 2014, is the first autonomous member of the global Oxfam International confederation. Our mission is to empower communities to claim their rights and actively participate in decisions that shape their lives, building a world that is just, democratic, and sustainable. Rooted in Feminist principles, OZA challenges systems perpetuating poverty and inequality, fostering partnerships across South Africa to create meaningful change.

The Role of Non-Executive Directors

This voluntary, non-remunerated position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to systemic change locally and globally. As a Non-Executive Director, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight to OZA’s operations and vision.
  • Approve and monitor the organization’s strategy, budget, and operational plans.
  • Oversee risk management and ensure accountability.
  • Support the appointment and evaluation of the Executive Director.
  • Participate in Board Committees and contribute your expertise to specific areas.

This role requires a commitment of 15-20 days annually, including attendance at quarterly Board and Committee meetings. Members are expected to share the responsibility of attending meetings beyond standard working hours.

Desired Expertise and Attributes

OZA is looking for leaders with:

  • A deep alignment with OZA’s mission, values, and Feminist principles.
  • Experience in governance, organizational leadership, or advocacy.
  • Commitment to social justice and an understanding of South Africa’s development and humanitarian landscape.
  • Integrity, critical thinking, and a willingness to contribute their expertise collaboratively.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Collective Board expertise should encompass governance, finance, change management, activism, and resource mobilization, alongside subject matter knowledge in gender justice, climate justice, or sustainable development.

Why Join Oxfam South Africa?

This is an opportunity to influence systemic change, enhance your leadership profile, and collaborate with a global network of changemakers. By joining the Board, you will contribute to shaping policies that address inequality and injustice, leaving a legacy of impact for future generations.
