G20 Update Alert
C20 Summit Outcomes and the roadmap to South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
Attention: Editors
Date: 15 November 2024
The Brazilian Presidency of the G20 comes to an end next month, and civil society in South Africa are readying to take on the C20 in 2025. As South African and African civil society, we commend the relentless commitment of Brazil’s civil society and achievements as witnessed with the launch of the C20 Policy Pack 2024.
Various activities have been unfolding to prepare and empower CSOs in South Africa and the region to engage meaningfully in the G20 and parallel C20 process, giving continuity to a progressive agenda for global solidarity, equality and sustainable development.
Noting the principles of the C20, there is a commitment from civil society to drive a C20 process that is independent, transparent and inclusive, guided by human rights, gender equality and the empowerment of marginalised groups.
Civil society organisations and social movements in South Africa have been raising their voices about the global drivers of structural and racialised inequality, unemployment and multidimensional poverty in our country and in other developing countries across the world.
The C20 is a vital platform to build local, regional and global solidarity and momentum behind the vision for a fair world and the action that will make it possible.
As the mantle was symbolically passed on from Brazil to South Africa yesterday during the C20 Summit, our responsibility will be to set the conditions for a strong, participatory and collaborative C20 that amplifies the voices and deepens the impact of global civil society in the G20 process.
We are pleased by the successful contributions of civil society to the Brazilian C20 Presidency and look forward to further collaboration and support to build international solidarity.
