African Women Lead Conversations on Mining and Agriculture at G20 Think Tank Event

As South Africa hosts the G20 Summit this year, Oxfam South Africa will convene leaders, policymakers, community voices and researchers for a landmark dialogue to amplify the priorities, leadership and solutions of African women in two of the continent’s most vital economic sectors: mining and agriculture.

The one-day event, African Women in Mining and Agriculture, will be hosted by Oxfam South Africa together with the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for the Study of Race, Gender and Class (CSRGC) and the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC). The dialogue will take place on 31 July at the School of Tourism and Hospitality in Johannesburg under the Think Tank 20 (T20) South Africa banner.

Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, will deliver the keynote address, setting the tone for a day of critical conversations about how to transform historically extractive industries through feminist and community-led solutions. Other speakers include Prof Tinuade Ojo (CSRGC), Dr Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji (Women in Mining-Africa), Ms Joan Matjuda (Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine), and many more leaders in academia, industry and grassroots work.

The programme will address barriers to women’s leadership in mining, health and safety, climate justice, digital transitions, access to land, food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture. It will close with reflections on how these insights can feed into South Africa’s G20 presidency and global policy discussions on gender equality and just transitions.

“This is about centring African women not as passive beneficiaries but as active leaders shaping the future of our economies and communities,” says Nkateko Chauke, Acting Executive Director of Oxfam South Africa. “We are calling for real, bold commitments that shift power and resources to where they are needed most.”

The dialogue will generate clear feminist policy recommendations for South Africa’s G20 process, including practical proposals on land reform, fair value chains, climate finance and gender-based economic justice.
