Date: 8 October 2025
As part of the official programme of the Women 20 (W20) Summit, Oxfam South Africa, in partnership with W20 South Africa, will host an evening dialogue and dinner titled “Solving Debt Justice in the Current Polycrises through a Feminist Lens: Advancing Equality in Global Economic Governance” on 14 October 2025 from 19h00 to 21h00 at the Avianto Boma, near the Vivari Hotel in Johannesburg.
This exclusive event will bring together around 80 international and national delegates, including W20 representatives, policymakers, civil society leaders, and development partners, to explore the intersection between debt, inequality, and gender justice within the global economic system.
Dr Lebohang Pheko, a leading feminist economist and scholar, will deliver the keynote address, titled “Debt, Sovereignty and Inequalities: Why Feminist Principles Provide a Framework for a Sustainable Future.” Her remarks will set the tone for a reflective dialogue on how global economic structures can be reshaped to ensure justice, equality, and sustainability for women in the Global South.
The event will be opened by Isobel Frye, Senior Policy Advisor (G20) at Oxfam South Africa, and will close with remarks from Dr Sindiswa Mzamo, Co-chair of W20 South Africa and President of the Global Circle of Businesswomen, reinforcing the collaboration between civil society and the W20 leadership in influencing the forthcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit.
“Tax and debt justice are not only an economic issue; but fundamentally a gender issue,” said Frye. “Women, particularly in the global North, carry the heaviest burden of austerity and underfunded public services. This event aims to spotlight feminist approaches to debt reform and tax justice as key to building more equitable global systems.”
