Oxfam South Africa’s Executive Director, Lebogang Ramafoko to address United Nations on the cost of climate change.
Oxfam South Africa’s Executive Director, Ms Lebogang Ramafoko will today address the United Nations on the loss and damage caused by climate change and the impact of the climate crisis on the most vulnerable South Africans.
Ms Ramafoko will speak at the “Loss and Damage (L&D): Grounding Global Policy in Local Experience” event convened by the United Nations in New York.
The UN event will provide a global perspective on the issues of loss and damage (L&D) caused by climate change. Ms Ramafoko will speak to the lived experiences, local requirements and experiences of South Africans in the face of the climate crisis.
“There is no question who is most responsible for driving climate change,” says Ms Ramafoko.
“Rich countries have contributed an estimated 92% of excess historical emissions and are responsible for 37% of current emissions (despite being home to only 15% of the global population.”
Oxfam South Africa works with communities impacted by climate change and advocates for local communities’ rights to free, prior and informed consent to oil and gas explorations on the Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa.
Today’s event at the UN is intended to create a platform for dialogue on the real-life impacts of L&D and the needs of local communities. It strives to foster solidarity among civil society organizations (CSOs) from Africa, Latin America and the United States, in order to explore cross-country collaboration that can advance the loss and damage agenda at global, national, and local levels while aligning with local priorities.
